This was how life in India was, before we became completely dependent on plastic for all our daily needs.
But today everything is packaged conveniently and delivered to our doorstep.
A recent article in the journal Science Advances by an industrial ecologist from the University of California, calculated the total volume of all plastic ever produced as 8.3bn tonnes. Of this, some 6.3bn tonnes is now waste - and 79% of that is in landfill or the natural environment.
This vast amount of waste has been driven by modern life, where plastic is used for many throwaway or "single use" items, from water bottles and nappies to cutlery (straws) and cotton buds.
Is it really that difficult for us to get rid of plastic? No.
We do have multiple options available for these everyday "single use" plastic items that we seem to think we cannot live without. Some of the easiest ones to get rid of are plastic bottles, covers and straws.
